Understanding Self-Employment Tax
What is Self-Employment Tax?
Self-employment tax is how freelancers, independent contractors, and business owners pay Social Security and Medicare taxes. Unlike W-2 employees who split these taxes with their employer, self-employed individuals pay both portions.
How It Works
- 92.35% Rule: Only 92.35% of your net self-employment income is subject to SE tax (simulating the employer portion deduction)
- Social Security: 12.4% on income up to $176,100 (2025)
- Medicare: 2.9% on all self-employment income
- Additional Medicare: Extra 0.9% for high earners over $200,000
Tax Deductions
- Deduct half of your SE tax from adjusted gross income
- Business expenses reduce your net SE income
- Qualified Business Income (QBI) deduction may also apply
Quarterly Estimated Payments
Self-employed individuals typically must make quarterly estimated tax payments to avoid penalties. Due dates are April 15, June 15, September 15, and January 15.
