Understanding Bonus Taxation
How Are Bonuses Taxed?
Bonuses are considered supplemental wages by the IRS and can be taxed using two methods:
Flat Rate Method (Most Common)
- Federal withholding at a flat 22% rate
- For bonuses over $1 million, the excess is taxed at 37%
- Simple calculation, used by most employers
Aggregate Method
- Bonus is combined with regular paycheck
- Tax calculated on the combined amount
- Often results in higher initial withholding
- May result in a larger refund at tax time
FICA Taxes on Bonuses
- Social Security: 6.2% up to wage base ($176,100 in 2025)
- Medicare: 1.45% on all earnings
- Additional Medicare: 0.9% above $200K (single) or $250K (married)
Important Notes
Withholding is not the same as your actual tax liability. The amount withheld from your bonus is an estimate. When you file your tax return, the bonus is added to your total income and taxed at your marginal rate. You may owe additional taxes or receive a refund.
