Understanding FIRE
What is FIRE?
FIRE stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early. It's a movement dedicated to extreme savings and investment to allow for retirement far earlier than traditional budgets and retirement plans would allow.
The 4% Rule
The traditional FIRE number is calculated by multiplying your annual expenses by 25 (which equals dividing by 4%). This comes from the Trinity Study, which found that a 4% withdrawal rate had a high success rate over 30-year periods.
Types of FIRE
- Lean FIRE: Retiring with minimal expenses ($30-40k/year)
- Regular FIRE: Retiring with moderate expenses ($40-80k/year)
- Fat FIRE: Retiring with higher expenses ($100k+/year)
- Coast FIRE: Having enough invested that you can "coast" to retirement without additional savings
- Barista FIRE: Semi-retired with part-time work for healthcare
Key Factors
- Savings rate: The most important factor - higher savings rate = faster FIRE
- Investment returns: Stock market historically returns 7-10% annually
- Expenses: Lower expenses mean smaller FIRE number needed
